National Lockdown

It is with great sadness, that in full compliance with Government legistion to reduce the spread of Covid-19, we will be closed from (and including) Thursday 31st December. We will remain closed until we hear otherwise. The Government is reviewing the situation every 2 weeks.

Since re-opening in July we have complied with all Government trading guidelines and as a result have provided a safe environment for both our staff and customers. Rest assured that when we are allowed to re-open that we will continue to ensure that The Hare & Hounds remains a safe environment for all of us. We will continue with our rigorous cleaning regimes, we will continue to observe hand washing protocols, we will continue to use table ordering and/or our online ordering system, we will continue to take payment by card whenever possible, we will continue to provide table service only, we will continue to take contact details for track and trace and we will continue to use solid screens to protect customers and to separate tables.

We look forward to welcoming you back soon.  Your continued support means so much to us!

Thank you and stay safe.

Keeping you safe…

Welcome to the Hare & Hounds

The Hare & Hounds lies in the heart of beautiful East Devon, between Sidmouth and Honiton. Inside this traditional country Free House you will find wooden beams, log fires, very local ales and a warm welcome for all the family. Famous for years for the quality of our Carvery, we also offer an extensive menu of freshly prepared classic pub food. Outside, as well as two car parks, there is a children’s play area set within a large garden which boasts beautiful views down the valley to Sidmouth and the sea.

The surrounding area has many footpaths and archeological sites making this a popular destination for walkers. Dogs are welcome in our Tap Room and Lounge Bar.

Although renowned for food, The Hare & Hounds is still a real country pub and you are just as welcome to drop in for a a pint of real ale or a glass of wine.

Legendary Carvery

“Often imitated, never bettered”

We have spent years perfecting our carvery, particularly the cuts of meat we use. Our long relationships with local suppliers means we are offered the best fresh Devon meat and vegetables available, some from farms within a few miles from The Hare & Hounds.

Served Every Lunchtime and Evening and all day on Sunday.

We recommend that you book, particularly for weekends, bank holidays and school holidays.

Dining & Drinking

All our dishes, including our famous carvery are lovingly prepared by our chefs using the best local ingredients.

The safety of our staff and guests continues to be our number one priority. We have introduced measures including;

  • table service only
  • sanitising stations
  • table spacings which adhere to government guidelines on social distancing
  • introduction of an online ordering system
  • a separate entrance & exit
  • regular sanitising of all communal facilities and allocated time slots to allow for table sanitising between bookings.

Excellant carvery and good specials board

“We visited on a Friday lunchtime, had booked a table but place not overly busy which was good, no queue at the bar or carvery. We last visited here about 20 years ago and was impressed by its modernisation and décor all for the better. Carvery was excellent, beef very tender and tasty best meat I have had on a carvery for a long time, plenty of hot veg, pork was also good. Specials board was very interesting, tempted to have a seafood pot but resisted, husband had a pan fried lamb steak with red wine sauce which he said was delicious and it looked very nice. Staff very friendly and helpful and all very good.”

An excellent place to eat

“Every time we have eaten here we have enjoyed our meal. The carvery is wonderful value for money. There is a lot of choice and gluten free gravy is available if required which pleased my relative.”

A superb lunch!

“A party of us had lunch last Wednesday and it was super – the most tender succulent beef I’ve ever had. They were busy, but we were well looked after and the price was very reasonable”

Family gathering - Definitely book ahead.

“Went for an early dinner with about 20 family. Very glad we booked as most other tables were also booked. Carvery started at 6pm (this was on a Friday) and it starred to get very busy. Food came out very fast, but we were not rushed at any stage.”

Best Carvery around!

“Best Carvery around! Meat and Veg are always fresh and delicious. Excellent selection. Be sure to book otherwise you may be disappointed!”
